As a long suffering NY Jets fan, I was thrilled to see my team make it into the playoffs last night. Since the Jets have not won a Super Bowl since before I was born, any entree into the playoffs means I have shot at seeing a Super Bowl victory after all of these years!
So, what does a small business have to do with football? A lot actually….as there are so many comparisons to draw and below I have listed some of them for your enjoyment:
– Pro football is a business pure and simple…and that business needs to be run just like yours by growing sales and profits and having satisfied customers who always come back for more.
– Even though the game of football seems like just that, these organizations are set up to resemble most any company with CEO’s, VP’s, Directors, and administrative staff who run the business daily.
– Pro teams, just like your company, need to make sales and turn a profit to survive. Football teams earn money by selling tickets to games and selling merchandise like player jerseys. Your business does the same. You either sell a service or product to interested consumers.
– Businesses must change and adapt to current times and all businesses must take heed if they want to succeed in the future. Listening to fans/customers about what they want and what they desire is critical to adapting your business to an ever changing world. If you ignore your customers someone else will happily serve them!
What I love about pro football teams is that they never ever give up the pursuit of winning. No matter how tough it gets and no matter what people say about them they forge ahead and do what it takes to win. You need to be the same way. Times will get tough and you may not immediately succeed and it often takes years to do so. Staying the course and being relentless in your pursuit of excellence will allow you to achieve your goals and enjoy your life so much more!
