Does anyone have a "recall procedure" in place for their products? I have looked through the FDA site ( http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/ComplianceManuals/RegulatoryProceduresManu... ) but they don't seem to have any suggestions for what should be included like they do for labeling. Any guidance on this would be really appreciated!

Thanks for posting this discussion, Tracy. It's definitely a great questions and one that I've often wonder about. There is surely an easy answer to how this is best handled for a small biz offering handmade products when you most often really can't know who bought what where.
If someone has any advice on this, I'd be interested in it as well.

Tracy,
Oooh, this is such a good question. I'm hosting a webinar exclusively for IBN members with an FDA official later this month and I will be sure to add this question to the list.
I see that you are an IBN member! This is great, because you can attend the webinar, and if you cannot be there in person, I'm recording it for members to listen to after.
Be sure to RSVP for the event!
Thanks for raising this important question.

I hope none of us ever need to do a recall, but for starters, make sure all of your products are labeled with batch numbers, and keep a log of all those batches detailing the ingredients you used, from which suppliers, etc. Without well documented batch numbers, no recall plan will help us!

Ginger - I found this template online today and after purchasing and customizing, find that it is well worth the $30 if you need to have this documented.

dM - Yes, I am the one you emailed with not too long ago about my Whole Foods application process. They are requesting this process to be documented. I will be interested to hear if the FDA offers any guidelines as their website mostly provides what THEY will do in a recall situation, not what WE should prepare to do or how it all should be documented.
Thanks everyone!

My product labels are custom made, but I actually print my own ingredient labels for most of my products, so I add the batch number on to the ingredient label. I write my batch numbers as month-year-batch number, so in the enclosed photo you can see 01-12-28 underneath the ingredient list. If I had made another batch of this same product in January, it would have been 01-12-29, and so on.
