Hi Teruko,
I like the safety factors that come with smaller containers. When damp air meets the lye, crystals can form. So the packaging in smallers containers really is an important aspect to my business - despite our volume needs.
Another factor to consider, Teruko, are the haz mat (hazardous materials) fees that go along with purchasing larger quantities of lye. Is it worth purchasing in bulk? Or, does the cost of smaller containers offset the haz mat fees that you would be responsible for when purchasing in bulk?

I've bought lye in 20 lb containers and then re-packaged it into the 2 lb bottles I saved from earlier an order. I just make sure the cap is tight and I've had no problems.

I have always purchased my lye in 50# bags from the local chemical company. If there is an additional fee it must be included in the price. The only requirement for this is that you transport it in a pickup or hitched trailer. We keep our lye in airtight containers. We keep daily amounts in smaller containers. It usually cost between $30 and $40 a bag.
