4. Beauty & The Business Trivia Question
: last week's winner was HBN member Alicia Grosso, a Lifestyle CEO from Culver City, CA. Alicia is a senior lecturer in the University of Southern California's School of Theatre, teaching various theater-related courses including stage make-up and properties, directing and technical theater. She's also an author and the owner of Annabella and Company Creativity Collective plus a few other businesses. She likes to spend time in her "sheddio" (shed + studio) creating everything from handmade soap to the makeup for her next stage make up class. After her Lifestyle CEO consultation, Alicia wrote to me a nice and encouraging comment that I'd like to share with you. Said Alicia: "I came away from my consultation with solid advice, useful options, reassurance that I'm on the right track and the best thing on which to spend my limited budget. If you don't already, you should know that Donna Maria speaks with Sisterly authority, grace and good humor. Her unique skill set, ranging from Law and marketing to soap and toiletry expertise and beyond is the guiding force behind HBN. I would recommend a consultation, especially when you're ready to take that "next big step."

Thanks for the encouraging comments Alicia! And good luck with all the fun stuff you're working on!

Last Week's Question: Recently, an influential consulting firm published a study exhorting American corporations to increase hiring outside the country or risk "extinction." A new term of art has sprung up as a shorthand way of identifying countries where labor is outsourced by American corporations who are following their advice. To win this week, state term used to describe these countries.

Last Week's Answer:  LCC (low cost country)

This Week's Question: Many home-based businesses do not relish the thought of people coming into their homes on a regular basis to work with them. Having said that, the owner of a growing home-based business must engage the services of others to do work for them. For legal and tax purposes, those persons need not be employees. Instead, they can be another type of worker, known as this.

Be the first to correctly answer this week's questions and win a 1/2 hour Lifestyle CEO consultation with me! (I enjoyed helping the last few winners so much, I can't wait to talk to this week's winner!)

Please read the contest rules here before submitting your entry. Put "TRIVIA CONTEST ANSWER" in the subject line or your answer will not be considered.

While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the winner's name will be announced in the next newsletter!

6. Lifestyle CEO: Love What You Lead, Lead What You Love

\Life.Style CEO\n.  A person who owns and manages a business, not solely for financial gain, but also to enjoy the personal rewards of entrepreneurship, independence, flexibility and fun.

Recently, Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski turned down a lucrative offer to become the Los Angeles Lakers’ basketball team's head coach. In saying "thanks but no thanks," Krzyzewski, who spent 24 years building Duke's team into one of the most successful and well respected of all time, spurned a $40 million contract and the potential for the type of fame, fortune and recognition one can enjoy only in a place like Hollywood.

In rejecting the offer, Coach K, as he has affectionately become known throughout college basketball, summed up his decision with the simple statement that, "Your heart has to be in whatever you lead."

The simplicity of that statement belies its truth, both in life and business. A parent who does not love his children cannot lead them in the ways that will best prepare them for life in a difficult world. A preacher who does not have a great love for God and God's people cannot lead them in a way that will be most helpful to them. A teacher who does not love her students cannot lead them in ways that help encourage the character and brainpower they will need to be successful in life. A Lifestyle CEO cannot lead her business and family effectively, and with compassion and fortitude, unless she has a great love for both of them.

While Coach K is not a Lifestyle CEO in the sense that he owns his own business, he certainly is one in the sense that he is the chief architect of one of the college basketball's most well known, respected and successful teams. Coach K boasts a 621-179 record in 24 seasons at Duke, and led the team to national championships in 1991, 1992 and 2001. Under his leadership, the Duke Blue Devils have 10 Final Four appearances, eight Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championships and 10 conference regular-season titles. As Coach K said in announcing his decision, "It became apparent that this decision was somewhat easier to make because you have to follow your heart and lead with it.” In sum, while the coach may have blinked a few times at the financial incentive, the bottom line was that his love for Duke University and the basketball tradition he established there were far more important to him that the glitz of coaching the most recognized franchise in basketball history and the chance to work closely with basketball talents like Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

For Coach K, the hold that Duke has on his whole heart is undeniable. In fact, according to him, "it has no price." While it's doubtful that he would have stayed at Duke without the benefit of the handsome salary and benefits he enjoys there, the fact remains that he could have had the potential for much more of both if he had accepted the Lakers' offer. Following his heart and being content to do what he loved on his own terms took precedence.

It's the same way with those Lifestyle CEOs who have left well paying jobs to become their own bosses. Sure, staying with the status quo may have been more financially appealing, but doing what one loves on his or her own terms offers far more long term satisfaction. While Coach K could have coached anywhere, and would likely have been a success doing so, he chose to follow his heart and practice his love for coaching basketball on his own terms. To do what you love to do, and to do it on your own terms. As Coach K knows, that has no price.

7. Handmade Beauty Product Review: Coco Mango Lotion by Nyah Beauty

Continuing with my "get ready for fall" lotion theme, I'd like to tell you this week about a delicious concoction that is super creamy, super fragrant and super nice. Made from scratch from start to finish by HBN member La Shonda Tyree of Nyah Beauty. Nyah is pronounced "nee-yah" and stands for "purpose". It is the force behind La Shonda's company, which uses the slogan "Beauty With Purpose" to drive home its mission to provide quality skin care that your skin will love.

Nyah's body lotion comes in a variety of scents, each with a complementary color to match. Each batch is lovingly made with sunflower, aloe vera and coconut oils, plus cocoa butter. For scent, I chose the CocoMango because of its tropical, sweet coconut "flavor." As much as I like it, I have to say that my daughter likes it even more. While I enjoy the fresh scent, my enjoyment of the product stems mainly from the way it makes my skin feel -- soft and silky without he greasy feeling that some lotions leave behind. My daughter, on the other hand, seems to be captivated with the scent, explaining over and over again, "Hmmmmm, mommy, smells good."

You may recall that I reviewed another lotion made by an HBN member last week. If you missed that review of Dropwise's Divine Lotion, you can enjoy it here. For comparison purposes, if you want a lotion but your skin is very dry, I would go with the Dropwise product. If you like lotion but your skin is normal to oily, Nyah's lotion is definitely the choice from my experience. I'm lucky to have both so you have any doubt, get one of each! You can't go wrong with either!

You can get your own Nyah Beauty products from HBN member Nyah Beauty. While there, don't forget to check out the other goodies like petal soap, bath jelly for kids, massage butter and handmade soap. You'll enjoy the great experience of navigating Nyah's well planned website, which makes it easy to find and buy the products you want.
