3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question
: the winner of last week's contest was Christi Condon of Westerville, Ohio. Christi won a sample of the answer to last week's question!

Last Week's Question: I am a fragrant white trumpet. A symbol of voluptuousness to many, girls in some cultures are traditionally forbidden to smell me for fear they will fall into a trance of voluptuous intoxication. I am found in some of the world's most precious perfumes and am quite precious on my own. To win this week, be the first to state my common and botanical names and you'll win a sample of me!

Last Week's Answer: tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa)

This Week's Question: While companies like Sony and Disney currently earn the largest portion of fees for licensing of their brands to other companies, a large cosmetics company is right behind them. By licensing its brands to other companies that market complementary but non-competing products, this cosmetics company (known for soaps and other cleaning products) is cornering an increasingly large share of the $71.5billion licensing industry by licensing its brands to companies that sell items such as contact lenses, hair dryers and pet products. This large cosmetics company has licensed one of its brands to a company that is known for its hair accessories. To win this week, state each of these 3 things: (1) the name of the large cosmetics company; (2) the name of the brand the large cosmetics company has licensed to the hair accessories company; and (3) the name of the hair accessories company.

The first person to correctly answer this week's question will win a copy of The Soaper's Cookbook co-authored by HBN member TJ Currey of Caerlon Gardens Luxury Soap.

Please read the contest rules here before submitting your entry. Put "TRIVIA CONTEST ANSWER" in the subject line or your answer will not be considered.

While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the winner will be notified by email and their name posted in the next newsletter!

4. Create The Life You Love™: Earning A Living

Recently, newspapers and business periodicals have focused on the insane salaries and excessive compensation packages paid to the heads of some of the nation's largest corporations. High atop the list of these overpaid executives is Krent Kresa, former president of Northrop Grumman. In his last year at the helm (and in a year where Northrop Grumman's stock price remained flat), Kresa's base salary was nearly $1.4million, including $94,104 for unused vacation time, plus bonus and incentive pay of $7.8million. Now that he is retired, Kresa enjoys an annual pension of $2.7million, five years of country club dues and a $5,000-a-day consulting fees.

Now don't get me wrong -- I know that we all need money to live. I also know that salary differentials are to be expected depending on the profession at issue, as well as the skill set and performance of the person making the money. However, it has become increasingly clear to me over the past several years that there is no correlation whatsoever between the pay earned by top executives and the performance of the companies that employ them. All this excess has started me to thinking about what a blessing it is to actually earn a living -- the way small entrepreneurial businesses do.

A recent version of my dictionary defines "earn" as "to acquire by labor, service, or performance; to deserve and receive as compensation or wages." While Kresa and persons like him certainly earn part of their exorbitant salaries, I hardly think that they earn the entire sum in the way that term is meant to be used. Small businesses are different.

Small entrepreneurial businesses start from scratch. Unlike Kresa who may not have even known about his employer when it was founded, small businesses actually begin from nothing. They start with a seed of an idea, (maybe) a little money, a dream and some heartfelt passion. They grow from the ground up, so that eventually, the founder and those supporting her can earn a fair wage along with perhaps an incentive bonus as recognition for jobs well done.

While a small business owner may not be able to afford 3 luxury condominiums, exclusive country club dues and vacation romps in locations with the world's rich and famous, they can find great satisfaction in the fact that whatever they can afford to do, they have actually earned it.

To eat what you kill. To be compensated fairly for a job well done. To see your labor bear fruit. To earn a living, support a family, fairly compensate your employees, give to worthy causes of your choice and save for the future -- all by virtue of how well and skillfully you perform your daily tasks. This is earning a living. This is the kind of true satisfaction that the overcompensated executive will never enjoy.
