to order! This Week's Question: I was born in 1896 in Virginia,
but raised in Chicago. I began studying cosmetology as a teenager and after
I became associated with Madame C. J. Walker, I became a successful beauty
culturist. I am credited with inventing the first permanent hair-waving
machine used by millions of women of African descent around the world, and I
was the first African-American woman to be awarded a patent. I have been
called "The Grand Dame of Black Beauty Culture" and I worked
diligently throughout much of my life to raise money for historically black
colleges. Who am I? Be the first to correctly answer this week's question and win a
copy of Natural Foot Care by Stephanie Tourles, courtesy of
Storey Books. Please read the contest rules here
before submitting your entry.
While time does not permit me to respond personally to all entrants, the
winner will be notified by email and their name posted at HBN's home page. Sweet Potato Rose Smoother For Dry Skin is a new recipe I whipped
up last week because my skin felt old. After dinner, there was some baked
sweet potato left over. As I slaved over the kitchen sink, I remembered two
things abut sweet potatoes: beta carotene (which is good for the skin) and
soft/buttery texture. Bing!! It occurred to me that if I mixed it with just
the right stuff, I'd have a great dry skin treatment. Check it out, along
with tons of other great skincare treats at Make
Your Cosmetics.com
3. Handmade Beauty Trivia Question: The winner of last week's contest was

You know that commercial about York Peppermint Patties ... the one where a very enthusiastic thespian is dressed in winter clothing, perched atop a ski slope with a scarf blowing in the wind ... and they say, "When I bite into a York Peppermint Pattie, I get the sensation of ..."? Well, that commercial was my second thought after my lips had a taste of Cocoa Mint Hemp Lip Butter by Greenridge Herbals. My first thought was, "Mmmm, this stuff feels so good on my lips."
In order for me to really like it, a lip balm has to do at least two things: (1) feel smooth, not chalky or hard, when I put it on; and (2) provide a smooth base for lip stick. This balm does both. It's the perfect combination of cocoa butter and base oils, including hemp and apric
ot kernel oils, and some wax as a thickener. It goes on smooth and creates an effective barrier against the winter chill, helping my lips stay soft and supple. I only need a slight layer of it under my lip stick and my color stays on without creasing. As a bonus, Cocoa Mint Hemp Lip Butter has a touch of stevia (a natural sweetener) which makes it just sweet enough. The other thing I like about this balm is that it's not heavy on the peppermint essential oil. Instead, just a little peppermint oil is tastefully added for a bit of "punch" but not so much that it makes my lips feel tingly (which really means they'd be slightly irritated). I'm usually not much of a peppermint or chocolate fan and I have used other peppermint/chocolate lip balms, but this one is first rate and has now found a place of honor in my purse! And since my purse now doubles as a diaper bag (or does my diaper bag double as a purse??!!), I'm glad that Cocoa Mint Hemp Lip Butter has a green cap and green label because it makes it easy for me to find among the booties, bibs and bottles!! Hemp Lip Butter is also available in Vanilla and Mango Orange.
