2. HANDMADE BEAUTY TRIVIA QUESTION ~ Last week's winner was
Jessica Stier of San Diego, California. Jessica won an
autographed copy of "Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions"!!

LAST WEEK'S QUESTION: Saying that he had learned that "women
used more face powder than baking powder," this son of slaves who also excelled as an attorney, insurance salesman and banker, created a face and body powder "to harmonize with the color and skin texture of women of our race." Claiming that his company was "strictly a Negro enterprise," he hired only African American males to peddle his products door to door in the early 1900s. An elementary school is named after him, and his manufacturing facility in a major US city was designated an historical landmark in 1998.  His products continued to be manufactured and sold until the early 1980s.  To win this week, provide the name of this inspirational American beauty business pioneer.

LAST WEEK'S ANSWER: Anthony Overton.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: In 1921, the first successful perfume laden with synthetic fatty aldehydes was launched and met with rave reviews. Described by its creator as "the smell of a snowy landscape," the perfume remains one of the most successful perfumes of all time. To win, name both the perfume and the person credited with its creation.

Be the first to answer this week's question and win a selection of handmade bath products from Joan's Gardens! Read contest rules at http://www.handmadebeauty.com/htns_Newsletter.htm

3. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEW by Terri

~ Suite of Handmade Beauty Products by HBN Member Great Bay Soap Company

"Sex on the Beach" Soap. 3.5 oz. ~ $3.00

I first used this one while I was on vacation at the beach.  The fragrance was fresh and stimulating.  The natural exfoliation was an added bonus. This soap was also very long lasting.  My family of 5 bathed in it for a couple of weeks.

"Apple Jack" Soap. 3.5 oz. ~ $3.00
The fragrance was a warm cinnamon-ny, reminding me that fall is just around the corner. A welcome thought on a hot sultry South Carolina day!

Lotion Bar. ~ $4.50
I was extremely pleased with the lotion bar. What a unique concept, lotion in a tube! This is a great item for travel and is very emollient. And the price makes it a great bargain.

GG's Body Balm. 2 oz. ~ $5.00

By coincidence, "GG" is my childrens' name for my mom.  I liked the product instantly. Once I removed the shell encrusted top, I was not one bit disappointed. The silky cream was a royal treat. Made with ingredients like sweet almond, apricot and jojoba oils, it was good enough to eat. The fresh ocean scent was clean and refreshing. I highly recommend each and every one of The Great Bay Soap Co. products I tried. They are superior quality a real treat to use. Who knows, I may even share some with my GG!

I also enjoy reading the handmade beauty product reviews.  Thanks to The Handmade Beauty Connection for letting me know about so many wonderful handmade beauty products. I don't have time to make my own, but I sure love buying from people who do! I'll be doing lots of holiday shopping at HBN's site this year!! It's so nice to go there and browse all the wonderful handmade goodies in one place!

4. SKINFORMATION ~ Pure Aloe Vera To Treat Scrapes/Sunburn

If you're like millions of Americans, this weekend provides
an opportunity for a last beach bash before the end of the summer season. If you spent any time in the sun, you could probably benefit from a healthy dose of pure Aloe barbadensis (common name: aloe vera) gel to soothe areas of skin that may have been irritated or burned by the sun's rays. Though there is no shortage of "mass-made" products, containing synthesized aloe, why not try some pure aloe vera from your own plant?

Aloe species are indigenous to Africa. When I was there last year, I had the pleasure of living with 25 aloe plants which thrived all winter outside my apartment. You may not find aloe in abundance where you are, but the plants are usually easy enough to purchase at nurseries and even some hardware stores. Since they don't need a lot of water to thrive, they are easy to maintain.  To use aloe as a skin soother, use a knife or pop sickle stick to split an aloe leaf down the middle. Scrape the clear liquid from the leaf and use it straight from the plant to soothe sunburn or nearly any skin irritation. The one time I made the mistake of undergoing a facial treatment using "mass-made" glycolic acid peels, fresh aloe soothed my skin quickly and effectively. Today's
Aromatic Beauty Food recipe uses fresh aloe vera gel.

5. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ Light Aloe Cleanser

This mixture is a thin, light blend to cleanse and soothe
normal to oily skin.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons fresh aloe vera gel from your plant
1 tablespoon egg white
1 teaspoon sour cream
1 drop tea tree essential oil
1 drop lavender essential oil

Blending Procedure

Place all ingredients except essential oil in a mini-food processor and whiz together for about 30 seconds. Place in a small bowl, add essential oils and stir. Add a bit of powdered oatmeal to thicken the mixture just enough to make it spread easily over your face without being too thick.  To use, massage gently over skin. Rinse well and follow with toner and moisturizer of choice. For your toner, you might like Tea Thyme Facial Toning Fluid. The recipe is in our Archives at www.handmadebeauty.com.
