3. HANDMADE BEAUTY TRIVIA QUESTION ~ Last week's winner was Lisa Williams
of Makinen, Minnesota. Lisa won an assortment of soaps made by Of The
Earth Soapworks in Austin, Texas!!
LAST WEEK'S QUESTION: I am a celebrated source of energy, a
dancer of many forms. I have been called "the sensitive chaos."
Both life giver and life taker, I am the transparent home of many. Though
I have my own language (which you may not understand), I am also generous,
being called by the philosopher Hegel, "the mother of all that is
special." What am I?
LAST WEEK'S ANSWER: Water
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Saying that he had learned that "women used more face powder than baking powder," this son of slaves who also excelled as an attorney, insurance salesman and banker, created a face and body powder "to harmonize with the color and skin texture of women of our race." Claiming that his company was "strictly a Negro enterprise," he hired only African American males to peddle his products door to door in the early 1900s. An elementary school is named after him, and his manufacturing facility in a major US city was designated an historical landmark in 1998. His products continued to be manufactured and sold until the early 1980s. To win this week, provide the name of this inspirational American beauty business pioneer.
Be the first to answer this week's question and win an autographed copy of Donna Maria's "Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions"!

4. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEW by Donna Maria
~ Custom-Designed Aromatherapy Facial by Inner Sanctum Salon & Day
Spa, Silver Spring, Maryland 2 hour treatment ~ $120; Call Inner Sanctum
at 301.585.3756.
Earlier this year, I wrote about my aromatherapy facial at Inner Sanctum. (See 4/16/00 issue) It was so good, I had to have another ... this time, customized especially for me by the Grand Dame of the Inner Sanctum, Ricey Clapp, an innovative esthetician and aromatherapist. After speaking with me about my needs, she customized a treatment just for me. It was so delicious that I can hardly do it justice in writing, but I'm giving it my best shot. If you are going to be in the DC area, make an appointment for one of Ricey's custom treats. You're Worth It!!
My Custom-Designed Aromatherapy Facial Sequence
1. Lavender Foot Compress - warm, soft, lavender
infused cotton prepared me for 2 hours of pampering
2. Linden Face Compress - fragrant and soothing
3. Aubrey Organics Mandarin Orange Cucumer Cleanser - Ricey doesn't
typically use a lot of pre-made products, but she especially likes this
one. The aroma is light and sweet, and it cleansed gently. (Of course,
part of that was because
of Ricey's gentle application technique ...)
4. Brindi Ayurvedic Herbal Cleanser/Exfoliant W/ Neem Oil - Ricey
added neem oil (with a scent that many hate but I rather like for its
reminder of the smell of the earth) to a variety of ground herbs and nuts.
Applied to my skin, it provided gentle exfoliation.
5. Lymph Drainage of Neck & Face - All I remember of this is Ricey
applying gentle pressure to my neck area. ZZZzzzzz. Nothing like a
well-deserved afternoon nap.
6. Rose Hips/Rosewater Mask W/ Geranium Essential Oil-Yum!! This handmade
facial mask was wonderful! It felt like Ricey was applying angels to my
face. The combination of the gel created by the blend of rose hips tea and
pectin was oh-so-soothing.
7. Massage W/ Blackthorn Oil - a nice, massage with a
rich oil containing a proprietary blend of aromatics.
8. Dr. Lucas Championnaire Pulvarizator - my first cool mist
atomizer with this device was
invigorating. Ricey put lemon verbena and rose hydrosols together, and the
device caused a cool mist to rain all over my face. The rainforest in the
middle of suburbia!! Alas, this woke me up and signalled the end of my
afternoon of pampering. Darn! It just went by too quickly!!
9. The application of a light facial oil as a moistuzier and
a tender foot and lower leg massage with
more Blackthorn Oil.
I was Queen for the Day! If you
can't get to the DC area for Ricey, I hope you can find someone in your
area that can provide similar treatments employing handcrafted, *truly*
freshly made products. You're Worth It!!
5. SKINFORMATION ~ Using Pectin in a Facial Mask
Natural pectin, a water soluble substance found in several fruits
and vegetables, is used to thicken and stabilize liquid ingredients,
usually jams and jellies. It is available in liquid or powder form. Along
with the liquid of your
choice (water, hydrosol, herbal tea), pectin creates a gelee that makes a
highly effective and soothing face and/or body mask. Today's recipe
employs pectin to create the Herbal Jelly Mask used in my recent facial
treatment.
Additional recipes using pectin can be found in
"Making Aromatherapy
Creams & Lotions," available at www.donnamaria.com, amazon.com or
your favorite book store.
6. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ HERBAL JELLY MASK
Ingredients
3 ounces herbal tea (any kind that's appropriate;
Ricey used ose hips for my
mask)
3 ounces vegetably glycerin
1/2 ounce powdered pectin
Blending Procedure
Stir pectin into glycerin. When well mixed, slowly
add herb tea. The mixture
should thicken in 5 to 10 minutes. It will become thicker upon standing.
Stir to loosen mixture before application. Makes 10-12 applications which
should be stored in a tightly sealed glass container in the refrigerator
between uses for about 2 weeks.
