2. HANDMADE BEAUTY TRIVIA QUESTION ~ there were lots of close answers to last week's question, but still no winner!! You could win a $10 gift certificate to the HBN member handmade beauty business of your choice!

LAST WEEK'S QUESTION: In 1877, a St. Louis woman was admitted to the hospital, her arms paralyzed from the elbows down. It was later determined that she had been regularly painting her skin with lead contained in a whitening cream made by George W. Laird Co. The Laird company advertised that the product made men exclaim, "why dearest, your shoulders have quite recovered their milky whiteness -- thanks to Laird's ___________." Another Laird promotional brochure claimed, "with this essential, a lady appears handsome, even if her features are not perfect."

Be the first to name the product and win a $10 gift certificate (good for 7 days after receipt of prize notification) to shop at the HBN member handmade beauty business of your choice! Read contest rules at www.handmadebeauty.com/htns_Newsletter.htm

3. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEW by Taylor

Taylor has always been drawn to the beautiful packaging of beauty products, but turned off by the heavy fragrances, high prices and big business. Learn more about Taylor at www.handmadebeauty.com/product_review_panelists.htm. We're listening, Taylor!!

~Honey Almond Body Butter by Willow Moon Soaps & Sundries.
2.5 oz. ~ $7.50

Lotion bars are an efficient way to seal moisture into your skin when used after bathing while your skin is hydrated. Willow Moon's Honey Almond Body Butter smoothes on in wide swaths from the oval twist-up tube, and massages in almost instantly. My personal criteria for a lotion is: How long does it keep my bare legs from looking flaky? This product performs well. The base of cocoa butter, almond oil, beeswax, olive oil and shea butter is boosted by calendula and chamomile, with natural antioxidants. The dominating smell of the cocoa butter fades a few minutes after application, which I was glad of. I would be careful of this product in my purse or car in hot weather; it melted a tad in shipping, but it's nicely firm in my bathroom. Lotion bars will catch on, I expect, and I congratulate Willow Moon on a luscious and successful offering.

4. WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCTS?

In my travels, I frequently converse with people who think that creams, facial cleansers and body scrubs must be purchased by big name cosmetics companies. Helping them learn about the unique benefits of handmade beauty products opens up a whole new world of possibilities for them, and revolutionizes the way they think of caring for their skin. I recently read the comments of Hanle Pieterse, a South African, who makes and uses her own skin care products with great results. Hanle graciously allowed me to share her comments with you. I couldn't have said it better myself!

"I have an oily, acne-prone skin, even though I am 41 years old! Four years ago, after the birth of my youngest, my skin seemed to have become sensitive to even the most expensive moisturizers. I was getting eczema, acne, etc., from everything I tried. As a present, a friend gave me an aromatherapy book that contained a moisturizing skin oil recipe. I tried it and have never looked back. The texture and appearance of my skin has improved so dramatically that my sister took me aside one day and asked me for the lowdown on my facelift! What a compliment! I have gone from really ugly looking skin, to hearing frequent compliments on my skin. The best part of all is that it is so inexpensive to make my own beauty products!! No matter what you pay for the oils, it goes a long, long way. I have found that grapeseed oil is great for my oily skin, and now and again I use macadamia nut, avocado or olive oil.

I do not use any commercial products on my face or body (except make-up) anymore. I have formulated a soap for my face, use my handmade oil as moisturizer (sometimes with essential oil and sometimes not) and an oatmeal and rose facial mask."

5. SKINFORMATION ~ Helping You Care For Your Skin

This week's Aromatic Beauty Food Recipe contains one of the most precious gems of the aromatic world ... pure rose essential oil. Rose essential oil is typically taken from the petals of roses by a process of steam distillation. The petals are placed on a grate and surrounded by steam. The steam is allowed to flow through a cooling pipe where it condenses into liquid form. This fragrant liquid is the precious rose water (also called hydrosol) and rose essential oil. The oil is separated completely from the hydrosol through further processing, and both are excellent skin conditioners. They are effective for any skin type, especially dry, mature and sensitive. As you can see from the Papaya Rose Cleanser recipe, you need only a small amount of rose oil for any beauty recipe.

The other skin loving ingredient in this week's recipe is papaya flesh. Papaya is a native American fruit that contains papain, an enzyme that helps eliminate dead skin cells and keeps skin soft and supple.

6. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ Papaya Rose Facial Cleanser & Mask

KQDS in Duluth, Minnesota Rocks!! I was a guest on KQDS last week. Before the interview, I sent the host a box full of freshly made skin care products. Papaya Rose Facial Cleanser & Mask was a hands down favorite in the office!! This recipe makes enough product for about 10 facial cleansings so be sure to cut it in half or share it with a few friends while it's still fresh!!

Ingredients
flesh of one fresh, unripe papaya, seeds removed
2 tablespoons fresh whole whipping cream
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 ounce (about 1 heaping tablespoon) finely ground chickpea flour
1 tablespoon finely ground almonds (optional, for added exfoliation)
5 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops rose essential oil

Blending Procedure
Slice the papaya in half and remove the seeds. Set the seeds aside and then remove the papaya flesh using a spoon. Place the papaya flesh in a small food processor with the cream, egg yolk and honey and process until smooth. Add chickpea flour and process further. The mixture should be smooth, but you should see small flecks of papaya flesh as well. You can add the almonds at this point if desired, and process to incorporate. Pour the mixture into an airtight container. At this point, you can stir in the papaya seeds if you want added exfoliation and texture as you cleanse your skin. Store Papaya Rose Cleanser in the refrigerator between uses. It should last a little over a week but it's best if used freshly made. Enjoy the pretty peach color of this product!

To Use
Apply to face and neck (or your entire body!) using gentle, upward sweeping motions to clean the surface of the skin. Repeat if skin is especially dirty. You can allow Papaya Rose Facial Cleanser & Mask to remain on the skin for about 10 minutes as it makes an effective mask treatment as well.

*Submit your recipe to recipes@handmadebeauty.com. If we use it in an upcoming issue, we'll credit you!!
