LAST WEEK'S QUESTION: This natural, indigestible, water-soluble fiber is used to thicken and stabilize food products. It is also used in spa products to create soothing skin care treatments, most notably face and body masks. Available in liquid or powder form, this product is present in large quantities in several fruits, including apples, peaches and plums.

LAST WEEK'S ANSWER: Pectin.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Each year since 1972, a select group of fragrance-related companies is recognized by its peers for creativity and innovation. Some people call the awards ceremony, held in New York, the "Oscars of fragrance world." Awards categories include "Bath and Body Star of The Year," The Most Original Magazine Feature," and "Technological Breakthrough of the Year". To win this week, state the name of the award and the organization that sponsors it.

This week's winner will receive a copy of Rosemary Gladstar's "Herbs For Natural Beauty" published by Storey Books! This book contains recipes for hair, face and body products that are fun and easy to make. Read contest rules at http://www.handmadebeauty.com/htns_Newsletter.htm

3. HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCT REVIEW

During the summer months, nothing is as refreshing as a tall glass of lemonade, don'tcha think? Really, when it's hot, nearly any fruit will do. But there's something about the brightly colored rinds of lemons, oranges and limes that are particularly appealing during the hottest times of the year. So, in honor of one of the stars of the summer stage, I'm reviewing a product this week that is full of the refreshing scent of Lemon!!

~Honey Lemon Hair Mask by 310. 5.6 oz. ~ $19.00
I hate washing my hair. Hate it hate it hate it because it's such a chore. I don't like myself with short hair (which I loved to wash when I had it ... didn't even own a comb!!) So I have long hair and it's just a pain. Every time I wash it, it takes at least two days for it to unfrizz. By then, it's nearly time to wash it again, especially in the summer. I have resisted getting a perm (except for the time me and my best friend ironed my hair before the junior prom in the hopes of straightening it out) and I hate the idea of dumping a bunch of chemicals all over it. Most shampoo brands are bad enough. So, it's against this background that I say ...

I Love Honey Lemon Hair Mask!! Love it love it love it!! OK, I was skeptical at first that it would make my hair feel any different than it always does after a wash ... stressed and frizzed. But I put this product on my dry hair before I washed it and let it sit (according to the directions on the package) for about 15 minutes. (Since I only had the sample size, I got a pretty small portion so I wasn't able to cover all of my hair. I chose to cover the middle and ends.) Then, I washed my hair as usual and after the first rinse, the part I had applied the mask to felt different. I'm serious. It was almost as if I had put conditioner on my hair when I hadn't. It wasn't a big difference, but it was noticeable. I washed a second time and applied my usual conditioner. I let my hair dry naturally and it really did feel softer and silkier than I am used to. And the smell was to die for. If you use it, be sure to have lots of towels on hand because the honey, egg yolk, sweet almond oil and other ingredients make it extra sticky. The bright golden color comes from the egg yolk and calendula and the smell is Lemon Summer Heaven. I'm getting some more of this stuff and I'll let you know whether it keeps up the good work. I hope this wasn't placebo!! You can buy 310 products at www.310online.com.

6. AROMATIC BEAUTY FOOD RECIPE ~ App-loe Face & Neck Gelee

This recipe is a soothing blend of apples and aloe to soothe, soften and lubricate your skin.

Ingredients 4 teasoons hot distilled water
1 teaspoon freshly juiced apple juice
1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin
1 heaping teaspoon powdered pectin

Blending Procedure
1. Add the glycerin to the water/juice/gel combination and stir to fully incorporate.
2. Add the pectin while the liquid remains quite warm (if it cools, place it in the microwave or a double boiler to raise the temperature) and use a hand held electric mixer to blend, or stir vigorously to dissolve the pectin. Once the pectin has fully dissolved, a light gel will begin to form. This may take from 15 minutes to 1/2 hour. Once the gel sets, App-loe Face & Neck Gelee is ready to use.

Instructions For Use
Apply the warm gel in a layer to your clean, damp face and neck. Rest for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and follow with a light moisturizer if desired. Leftover product can be stored in the refrigerator for about a week. Enjoy!!
